The Genealogy of Jesus

Matthew and Luke provide conflicting ancestral lines for Joseph, Jesus' father.

Matthew 1:6-16

"And David was the father of Solomon... [list of 27 generations] ...and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary."

Luke 3:23-31

"Jesus... being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli... [list of 42 generations] ...the son of Nathan, the son of David."

Analysis

Matthew traces the line through Solomon and lists 27 generations. Luke traces the line through Nathan and lists 42 generations. They also list different fathers for Joseph (Jacob vs Heli).
